Things to Do in Istanbul Laleli

Laleli - the capital of the shuttle business in Turkey. Almost entirely, it consists of nothing but shmotochnyh stores. Now Laleli acquired some European polish, but its essence has not changed - it's endless storefronts that sell clothes, as far as the eye.
Within this realm of junk, conceals two interesting historical sites in Istanbul - Ottoman mosque Laleli, she gave the name to this area, and an ancient Byzantine church Mireleyon, now Bodrum Jami Mosque. With her then, we begin viewing ...

Mireleyon Temple was built in the early 10th century emperor of Roman Lakapin, he was part of a large palace and monastery of the same name then, now did not survive.
The total volume of the church survives today almost unchanged, but the interior of the church lost forever. During the reign of Ottoman Sultan BayazidaII, Mireleyon was converted into a mosque and is known as Bodrum Jami.

Mosque of Bodrum - the interior.

After several devastating fires, the mosque of Bodrum looked like this.

It only restored in 1986, it is completely natural within novodelnaya.

Bodrum in Turkish means basement, reveals the essence of a good name of the ancient building, as the church itself is only the tip of the "underground of the iceberg." The fact that the church has a vast dungeon. Lakapin novel in the 10th century used to build the church and palace, under the foundation, the huge rotunda, created in Roman times.
Here I have tried to show the scale of a circular rotunda, on the church, which stands at the top.

Rotunda - a huge circular structure with a diameter of more than 40 meters, was built around the early 4th century. What it look like the original, say it is very difficult, as it is not clear and its purpose. There is a version that it was the Roman Museyon - pagan temple, later converted the Byzantines into something more honestly. Perhaps some time building served as a tank of water until it became the foundation for the palace of Roman Lakapin, and later the monastery Mireleyon.
Excavations of the Roman rotunda (Bodrum Mosque stands at the top left corner).

The walls of the rotunda is very thick at the bottom of the wall width of 6 meters. This suggests that the building intended to cover the huge dome like the Pantheon in Rome, though no confirmation of the existence of such a huge dome there. Perhaps the building was not completed as the end. Later, inside the rotunda put a lot of columns to support the flat roof, and the platform was used as the basis of the Byzantine palaces and monasteries.
The general form of the topsides and the church before the restoration.

And what can be seen today.

At the present time, totally dug the rotunda, restored and used under the clothing market as a whole and the surrounding area.
I took off a bit in this structure.

Directly Bodrum Mosque, stands a little apart from a giant cylinder has its own base.
The ground floor Mireleyona.

And then he looked like in 1930 - the process of digging underground ..

Under the mosque is the burial chapel, where all family members were buried Roman Lakapin, founder Mireleyona. Capella is also now more like a mosque, as it is used by the Turks, I have no suggestions.

On the wall are remains of frescoes, though see there is something it is not possible, it is considered that there is depicted the Virgin Protectress.

The second historical site in Laleli - this mosque, built v1759-63's, by order of Sultan Mustafa III. Mosque Laleli got its name from a local saint, is buried nearby.

Laleli - the last major imperial mosque, its style is strongly felt by European influence.
Inner courtyard of the mosque.

Interestingly, the mosque Laleli almost completely copies the structure of the church Mireleyon situated on it a few hundred meters.
In Laleli, were also members of the ruling dynasty are buried in the mausoleum of the mosque are buried Sultan - Mustafa III and his son Selim III, as well as their families. As in Mireleyone, the mosque has a vast underground room, a kind of underground caravanserai, which now sell clothes and other stuff, like everywhere else in the area.
Two places of worship in Laleli prove full continuity between the Byzantine and Ottoman cultures ...
Trading room is directly under the mosque. The bottom row of windows in this photo, the windows of the underground market.

The underground market.

Below, the mausoleum of the Sultan's family, included in the complex Laleli. There were more than the market and mosques, Islamic schools - madrassas and free food for the poor.

Ottoman kiosk in front of the complex Laleli.

Tomb of Sultan Selim and Mustafa.

Around the many graves of children and wives of the sultans.

Burial, located in a separate room, who is there, I did not understand.

The mosque has a bypass galleries Laleli and porch, as in the Russian churches of the 17th century, it is probably a common European influence, as you know the Italians have built, as in Russia and the Ottoman Empire.

Gunners news: Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle

Vermaelen nets stoppage-time winner as Gunners move one point behind third-placed Tottenham

Hosts pick up a huge win at the expense of the persistent Magpies and now move to within a point of neighbours Spurs as they search for the final automatic Champions League spot

EPL - Arsenal v Newcastle United , Robin van Persie
Hatem Ben Arfa opened the scoring with a venemous left-footed strike before Robin van Persie equalised less than a minute later.

Then, after a hard-fought second half, Thomas Vermaelen popped up in stoppage time to sweep home Theo Walcott's cross and give the Gunners a vital win.

Arsene Wenger made just one change from his side's 3-0 win over AC Milan, with Mikel Arteta replacing Gervinho.

For Newcastle, Ryan Taylor was forced out with injury and Papiss Cisse dropped to the bench, with Ben Arfa and Gabriel Obertan coming in.

After an open and entertaining start, the Magpies took a stunning lead in the 14th minute. Vermaelen gave the ball away cheaply in midfield to Cheick Tiote, who slid in Ben Arfa, and the Frenchman cut inside Kieran Gibbs before smashing the ball past Wojciech Szczesny at his near post.

Less than a minute later the Gunners were level. Straight from the kick-off, Tomas Rosicky released Walcott down the right side, the Englishman crossing for Van Persie who turned onto his left foot and slammed the ball past Tim Krul.

The Dutchman went close with a free-kick soon after but the Arsenal skipper's effort flew into his compatriot's arms.

Newcastle were holding their own with a five-man midfield and the pace of Ben Arfa, Gabriel Obertan, Jonas Gutierrez causing problems on the counter attack.

Gutierrez also went close after Mike Williamson nodded down Yohan Cabaye's deep free-kick but the Argentine's effort was charged down.

Arsenal had a great chance to take the lead late in the half, a corner from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fell to Walcott but, though the England winger's scuffed effort beat Krul, it was hacked off the line by Danny Simpson.

Former Nottingham Forest defender James Perch was brought on at half-time in place of Davide Santon in an attempt to stem the tide of Arsenal's right-sided attacks through Walcott and Bacary Sagna.

The Gunners made a good start to the second period, Walcott saw a firm header palmed away by Krul before Oxlade-Chamberlain hit a dipping volley over the bar.

The Magpies were on the ropes as Arteta's volley was blocked before Krul saved smartly from Van Persie's snapshot. Oxlade-Chamberlain was looking lively on the left, flying past two players before showing a lack of composure and firing well wide.

Alan Pardew made a change, bringing on derby hero Shola Ameobi for Obertan, who had struggled to impose himself, and the big striker tucked in behind the totemic Demba Ba.

Arsenal continued to press, Walcott getting the better of Perch down the right before cutting the ball back to Rosicky, who scuffed his shot well wide.

However, Wenger felt the need to make a change as he searched for a winner, replacing a visibly disappointed Oxlade-Chamberlain with Gervinho.

The game had become a scrappy affair with Cheick Tiote and Laurent Koscielny going into Howard Webb's notebook and Ba on the end of some rough treatment from the Arsenal defenders.

Sloppy play in defence almost cost Newcastle as Simpson and Ben Arfa tried to play their way out from the back. Gibbs nipped in to steal the ball and fed Van Persie but the Dutchman was unable to capitalise with a wild right-footed effort.

The Gunners were hammering on the door but were unable to find a goal. Arteta fired a free-kick across the six-yard box which fell to Gervinho but the Ivorian was caught off balance and scuffed his effort wide.

Krul was also at his very best in the 90th minute to keep the score down. Alex Song's chipped ball in found Vermaelen and the Belgian's looped header looked destined for the net before the Dutchman sprung into life to superbly tip the ball over the bar.

The Gunners still poured forward in stoppage time as Sagna whipped a fine ball into the path of Walcott, but the Englishman's first-time effort was blocked by Fabricio Coloccini, with Arsenal players claiming handball by the Argentine.

Arsenal finally got their goal in the fifth minute of added time. Theo Walcott led the charge down the right flank before sweeping a cross into Vermaelen who smashed home a deserved winner to ensure the Gunners have come from behind to win their last four games, a Premier League record.

Gunners news: Arsenal 3-0 AC Milan

Gunners crash out of Champions League despite astounding second leg victory

Goals from Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie had the Emirates Stadium dreaming of an unprecedented comeback, but the Serie A side held out to progress

UEFA Champions League : Christian Abbiati - Robin van Persie, Arsenal FC v AC Milan

Arsenal came within a goal of producing an unprecedented Champions League comeback but just came up short as they beat AC Milan 3-0.

First half goals from Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie set the Gunners on their way to an astonishing recovery but Milan were able to regroup at the interval and held out to secure progression to the quarter-final by an aggregate score of 4-3.

Milan's performance during the first 45 minutes was woeful, their frequent defensive errors allowing Arsenal back into the tie, but Massimiliano Allegri successfully reorganised his troops at the break and the Italians clung on.

Arsenal lined up in a more attacking style than usual due not only to the four-goal deficit they faced but also as a result of the absence of midfielders Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Abou Diaby. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho joined Theo Walcott in support of van Persie.

Milan made midfield changes of their own, with Kevin-Prince Boateng and Clarence Seedorf injured. Urby Emanuelson and Stephan El Shaarawy started alongside Antonio Nocerino and Mark van Bommel.

There are few more adept midfield anchormen in European football than Van Bommel, but the Dutchman's poor start to this game handed the Gunners hope. After receiving an early booking for a foul on Rosicky, Van Bommel failed to stick to Koscielny as Oxlade-Chamberlain whipped in a corner from the Arsenal left, allowing the Frenchman to head home at the near post after seven minutes.

Milan seemed to be slowing the tempo of the game down but Arsenal continued to expose the Serie A side's defence and revived the tie with two goals before half-time. First, Walcott raced down the right wing and fired a low pass across goal that was poorly cleared by an off-balance Thiago Silva straight into the feet of Rosicky, who calmly guided the ball beyond Abbiati.

Djamel Mesbah, in the absence of Luca Antonini, was enduring a torrid time at left-back and Arsenal were to take advantage of the Algerian in the build-up to their third goal. Oxlade-Chamberlain broke into the box past Nocerino only to find his path blocked by Mesbah, resulting in a penalty kick dispatched with aplomb by Van Persie.

All the focus was on Arsenal's search for a fourth goal but they might have had their hopes of progression put to bed if not for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. First, the Poland international raced off his line to sufficiently narrow the angle and force El Shaarawy to shoot wide, as the Emirates Stadium held its collective breath, and he was alert enough to repeat the trick on Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the break, this time saving at the feet of the Swede.

Szczesny's efforts were topped by Abbiati as the game approached the hour mark. Rosicky led a break into the Milan half and picked out Gervinho to his left. Abbiati did very well to stop the Ivorian's shot after it had taken a deflection and then proceeded to deny Van Persie, who had pounced on the rebound, from point blank range.

Szczesny was to make an equally important save 15 minutes later, but knew less about it. Substitute Alberto Aquilani slid a pass across the Arsenal box towards the back post and with half the goal to aim at, Nocerino poked his effort tamely back into the legs of the 21-year-old goalkeeper.

Arsenal's second half display was less dynamic than their first, and Milan's perhaps less error-strewn. Rosicky used the ball well but struggled to exert a consistent influence over the game, as did Gervinho, while Walcott displayed his more frustrating side after a positive first 45 minutes.

A dreadful Alex Song pass as Arsenal attacked for the final time summed up a disappointing second half that left Wenger's players dejected at the final whistle despite such a credible performance and victory.

Gunners news: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

Theo Walcott double caps sensational derby win as Gunners seal comeback from two goals down

The winger helped the hosts move back into fourth spot at the Emirates after further goals from Rosicky, Sagna and Van Persie turned a stunning north London derby on its head

Arsenal staged a stunning comeback from two goals down to thrash bitter rivals Tottenham 5-2 at Emirates Stadium to reclaim fourth spot in the Premier League table.

The Gunners closed the gap to their north London neighbours to seven points with a victory that looked highly improbable after Louis Saha and former Arsenal man Emmanuel Adebayor put the visitors into a two-goal lead.

But Arsene Wenger’s men, under so much pressure, showed remarkable character to stage a stirring fightback and beat Spurs for the first time in five league meetings, providing a massive boost in their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Bacary Sagna headed Arsenal back into the game before captain Robin van Persie struck superbly from 20 yards to make the score 2-2 at half-time. In a breathless second-half, Tomas Rosicky stabbed the hosts ahead before Theo Walcott capped the turnaround with two precise finishes.

To complete a miserable afternoon for Spurs, Scott Parker was sent-off three minutes from time for a second booking, a rash challenge on Vermaelen after he had booked in the first-half for a late tackle on Van Persie.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger sprung a surprise with his team selection, with Yossi Benayoun starting in midfield instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain while Kieran Gibbs started at right-back in place of the injured Per Mertesacker.

For Spurs, Adebayor was recalled to lead the line against his former club, with Younes Kaboul selected ahead of Michael Dawson to partner Ledley King in central defence.

Arsenal came into the game off the back all successive defeats to AC Milan and Sunderland - and they made the worst possible start as their bitter rivals took the lead after just four minutes.

A flowing move including Gareth Bale and Adebayor ended with Saha being sent clear as the Arsenal defence parted. The Frenchman appeared to have delayed too long before shooting, but his effort from just inside the penalty area took a huge deflection off Vermaelen and looped into the net.

Signs of discontent were evident in the Gunners crowd but the hosts responded strongly and should have equalised when the ball fell kindly for Van Persie but the Dutchman somehow shot wide of the post from 10 yards.

Arsenal were knocking on the door and once again thought they had equalised in the 22nd minute, but Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel defied his 40 years with a superb reaction save to keep out Rosicky’s glancing header from Van Persie’s corner.

At the other end, Harry Redknapp’s side served a reminder of their goal threat as Kyle Walker smashed a rocket just wide of the post following yet more confusion in the Arsenal penalty area.

In the 34th minute, Arsenal were punished for their lax defending when referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty after Bale went to ground, perhaps rather easily, under a challenge from Gibbs. Adebayor kept his cool to convert from the spot.

It seemed to stir Arsenal into action, the point from which the fear escaped from the Gunners players who have been so derided in the last couple of weeks. All of a sudden, one attack pulsed after another and Arsenal showed incredible spirit to fight back and draw the score level in three incredible minutes just before half-time.

Tottenham, perhaps too relaxed on their two-goal advantage, failed to react after Van Persie struck the post from a tight angle and Bacary Sagna was on hand to head home Mikel Arteta’s cross to put the hosts back in the game.

Three minutes later, a moment of genius levelled the scoreline. After picking up a poor clearance from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Van Persie manipulated a yard of space before expertly curling the ball into the corner from 20 yards past the despairing Friedel.

The hosts started in similar fashion after the break, Yossi Benayoun almost immediately forcing Friedel into a fingertip save as he attempted to stroke the ball into the net from the left side of the penalty box.

And six minutes after the re-start, Arsenal took the lead through Rosicky. The Czech midfielder timed his run to perfection to flick home Sagna’s cross from the right.

The Arsenal swagger of old was back, as if from nowhere. “Harry for England,” chanted the home fans, taunting the Spurs manager.

Redknapp would have wanted the ground to swallow him up as the Gunners applied their boot to Tottenham’s neck. Walcott made it four in the 65th minute, racing through and clipping the ball into the net.

Three minutes later he was gifted acres of space to fire across Friedel and low into the corner: 5-2.

It is Tottenham who have been known for clawing back two-goal deficits in this fixture in recent years, but this was Arsenal’s turn.

A miserable afternoon for Spurs was completed in the 87th minute when Parker was shown red for a second booking, a clumsy challenge on Vermaelen.

The Spurs midfielder had no arguments with the referee’s decision. And his team could have no arguments with the result.
