Rocket Car RAK-2

From 1926 to 1930. Germany is actively experimented with the use of jet engines. Moreover, the inventors predicted their widespread use in the aviation and automotive industry. The grandson of Adam Opel - Fritz von Opel (Fritz von Opel) was very enthusiastic in the matter. His first experience with rocket began with the installation on the car of two solid-fuel rocket engineer and inventor Frederick William Sander (Friedrich Wilhelm Sander). Chassis for the unusual in those days the power unit, used car from an ordinary Opel Kleinwagen 4.

The first behind the wheel of such an unusual combination of two different technologies offered to sit down racer Kurt Folkart (Kurt Volkhart), a German by nationality. The first race was a failure - the rocket did not create the required acceleration and the car, wrapped in clouds of smoke, drove at a speed of 5 km / h in just 150 meters.
Rocket Racing Car "Opel" has reached a speed of eight seconds at 100 miles an hour, Berlin, 1928.

Within a month for 12 solid rocket system have been installed on Sander specially designed for experiments car Opel Rak 1. From conventional cars of those years he was noted for small wings on the body and lower body parts. Behind the wheel again was allowed to sit Folkartu Kurt and all the action going on in the town avtotreke Shenauerhofe.
The second test with a "rocket car" Opel ended miserably. The speed of the first test was 235 kilometers per hour, but when he was "charged" to reach a speed of 350 km per hour, the car rolled over and exploded. Germany 1928.

This time the experiment was more successful. And while of the 12 missiles five refused, however, managed to overcome the mark of 100 km / h on the highway segment length of 1500 meters. A good check only provoke the team of inventors, and it was decided to construct the following model of a car with a jet engine to establish a record skorosti.Po job Fritz von Opel, planned for, it was decided to build a completely new racing car. Taken as the basis of race car "Bugatti» (Bugatti), which established three jet engines of Sander's new design. The car got its own name - Volkhart-R1.

At the same time it was started the construction of Opel Rak 2. The power unit already had 24 missiles, each of which provided a thrust of 250 kg. A ride on this car himself the grandson of the creator intended brand Opel.
The first was ready for testing Opel Rak 2. The historic race grandson of Adam Opel held May 23, 1928 Check in time is 24 seconds, for which the vehicle could cover the distance of 1,800 meters. Vehicle speed was just fantastic - 238 km / h And not only for the public, but also for the background of Opel - more, he never sat at the wheel of jet cars.

Tests Volkhart-R1 were held in the autumn of that year, though to beat the speed record failed. But it is known that the arrival in November 1928 Folkarta., Where driving a car Volkhart-R1, it was known as a tandem rider and passenger in a car with a jet engine. The role of the brave passengers were offered a familiar rider, and the race went off without accidents, but no records. And yet, despite the progress rate, Fritz von Opel had become indifferent to the idea of equipping cars jet engines and switched to other modes of transport.

arallelno with cars, the idea to install rocket engines to spread and popular in those years, motorcycles. April 1, 1929 Folkart at the famous Nurburgring race track testing produced motorcycle with Duma set of three missiles Sander. Experience has proved successful, and already 19 May 1929 on a motorcycle Opel Motorclub SS with a 14-Tew missiles another rider Lurcat Otto (Otto Luhrs) was able to shoot in front of astonished spectators.
Rocket-car racing in 1930, Opel in Germany has a top speed of 200 km. per hour.

But, as the designers themselves felt, cars and motorcycles would not be able to develop greater speed, so it was decided to switch to rapidly gaining popularity in the years aviation. And in June 1928 Fritz von Opel buys aircraft Lippisch developed a model glider Ente. Engineer and inventor Sander develops and installs them on a new type of missile, but the first run blast over the airframe.

The second copy of Opel-Sander RAK 3, or as it is called the Opel-Hatry RAK 3, because all these names have been put on board the aircraft, equipped with 16 missiles and Tew was installed on the booster catapult. Flight tests were successful - the distance that crossed the plane for 75 seconds, was more than 1.5 km. The flight went down in history aviation as the first manned flight of an aircraft equipped with rocket engines. However, the landing was very unsuccessful and the aircraft was badly damaged. Frustrated by such frequent accidents, Fritz von Opel, grandson of the legendary Adam Opel, refuses to fund further development. Actually, the story of Opel in the development of rocketry and aviation, and ends by making it brighter and its revolutionary events.

Gunners news: Arsenal 6-1 Coventry

Giroud breaks duck & Walcott grabs double in comfortable win

Goals from the Frenchman, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrey Arshavin, Ignasi Miquel and a Theo Walcott double saw the hosts through, with Callum Bell grabbing a consolation strike

Capital One Cup, Arsenal v Coventry City, Olivier Giroud

Oliver Giroud broke his duck for Arsenal as the Gunners cruised into the fourth round of the League Cup with a 6-1 victory over Coventry City but it was not all plain sailing for the striker as he missed a second-half penalty

The Frenchman gave the hosts the lead five minutes before half-time with a chip over the goalkeeper and other strikes from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrey Arshavin, a double from Theo Walcott and one for Ignasi Miquel settled the game, with substitute Callum Bell notching a consolation strike for the visitors.

Arsene Wenger, as expected in the League Cup, named a young line-up though some bigger names, including Giroud, Walcott and Arshavin, also started, while Oxlade-Chamberlain was in midfield with Nico Yennaris and Francis Coquelin.

Damian Martinez started in goal, while Miquel, Johan Djourou and Andre Santos were joined by Martin Angha. On the subs bench, promising youngsters Serge Gnabry and Thomas Eisfeld were accompanied by Marouane Chamakh and Emmanuel Frimpong, in his first match of the season.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors, after Frank Moussa got down the line before clipping a cross into the box. Stephen Elliot headed wide, with team-mate Gary McSheffrey appearing to get in his way.

But the hosts were not on the back foot for long and really should have been ahead through contract rebel Walcott. The ball fell kindly for the winger inside the area but he totally missed the ball after a wild kick at it.

Arsenal, and Arshavin in particular, began to step it up a gear, though the final ball was still lacking. Shots from the edge of the box were blocked or crosses were overhit, while Coventry were forcing Martinez into some work, though most of it was fairly routine stuff for the Gunners keeper.

But in the 39th minute, Arsenal did take the lead, with Giroud scoring his first for the club. The French striker was played in with a great ball from Coquelin and, after taking a touch, he elegantly chipped the ball over the onrushing Joe Murphy.

The Gunners almost had an acrobatic second minutes later when Giroud flicked on Walcott's cross for Miquel to send an overhead kick just wide of Murphy's goal but they had to be content with a one-goal lead at half-time.

Five minutes into the second period, the hosts had a great chance to extend their advantage from the penalty spot after Arshavin was bundled over by Jordan Clarke after the defender misplaced a header back to Murphy.

After a momentary pause to remove two pitch invaders, Giroud stepped up for the spot kick but his effort was well saved by Murphy, low to his right-hand side.

From the resulting corner, Miquel again came close, hitting the top of the bar with his header from Walcott's cross. But again, the Gunners were not to be denied, as they extended their lead in the 57th minute.

Oxlade-Chamberlain cut in from the left before playing a nice one-two with Santos and hit a scorcher from 25 yards into the top corner past the helpless Murphy.

And the Gunners soon put the game beyond doubt, with Arshavin being played in by Giroud before hitting a low shot past Murphy to all but seal their progression into the next round with half-an-hour to play.

With a little over 15 minutes to go, Walcott also got on the scoresheet, cutting in from the right wing, driving at the defence before lashing a shot into the far corner.

But Coventry did get something for their travelling fans to cheer, sneaking a consolation as substitute Ball got in between Miquel and Djourou unnoticed to tap home from six yards.

The Gunners responded immediately, however, with Miquel making amends for his sloppy play at the back to nod home Arshavin's cross.

Walcott completed the rout in added time, this time cutting in from the left in a similar fashion to his first before curling a shot into the far corner to the delight of the home fans still in the ground.

Gunners news: Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Koscielny saves point for Gunners after Lescott opener

EPL - Manchester City vs Arsenal,Laurent Koscielny

Goals from the centre-backs settled the game at the Etihad Stadium as both teams registered their third draw of the season in their fifth match of the campaign so far

The Gunners were the better side in the first half but found themselves 1-0 down at the interval after Joleon Lescott headed the hosts into the lead.

City became the dominant force after the break but conceded an 85th minute equaliser after Laurent Koscielny rifled home from just inside the box.

The result extends City and Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season, with both clubs having now drawn three games out of their opening five top flight fixtures.

Roberto Mancini recalled Sergio Aguero to the City starting line-up at the expense of Carlos Tevez while Koscielny made his first start of the season for the visitors with captain Thomas Vermaelen ruled out by illness.

Though Aguero tested Vito Mannone from distance early on, it was Arsenal who enjoyed the better start to the game with Gervinho let down by a heavy touch when fed through on goal by Aaron Ramsey.

Good work by Carl Jenkinson on the right byline saw the full-back outmuscle Lescott and cut the ball back for Lukas Podolski but the German could only sky wildly over the bar.

Gervinho lashed into the side-netting as Arsenal looked to capitalise on their early dominance but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock, with Lescott powering home a header after some questionable goalkeeping by Mannone from David Silva's inswinging corner.

As the first half drew to a close Mannone went close to making amends by tipping Edin Dzeko's fierce drive over the bar as City came close to doubling their lead.

Mancini replaced home debutant Scott Sinclair with Jack Rodwell at the start of the second half as City went on to negate Arsenal's early momentum.

Aguero was given an abundance of time at the far post before firing over when a ball back into the danger area may have been a more prudent option, while the Argentine was also denied a penalty after a collision with Koscielny in the box.

Arsenal began to look ragged in possession in their rare forays forward and Wenger sent on Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, while Mancini replaced Dzeko with Tevez with 20 minutes to go.

A powerful Yaya Toure drive right through the heart of the Gunners' midfield ended up with Aguero forcing Mannone into a near-post save before counterpart Joe Hart parried a Santi Cazorla shot from just outside the box over the crossbar.

The diminutive Spaniard swung in the subsequent corner and the ball broke to Koscielny, with the Frenchman taking a touch before rifling an equaliser into the top corner.

Vincent Kompany went close to restoring the hosts' lead with five minutes remaining, improvising excellently to chest down and fire in a bicycle kick which Mannone saved, before Aguero could only guide Koscielny's subsequent poor clearance agonisingly wide of the post.

Gervinho almost snatched a late winner for the Gunners but after sidestepping well the Ivorian could only fire rashly over the bar as the spoils were shared at the Etihad.
